There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a green marker; position this marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. Next, secure the cuff with the Velcro material. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm. Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, simply press the start button and remain still. The cuff will begin to inflate and numbers will appear on the display as the heart symbol flashes. When the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate, and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate.  generous cuff size, easy to operate, easy instruction manual January 6, 2009
I purchased the HM-711 DLX because it said it had a larger cuff. My arms aren't enormous (but obviously not twigs either) and I found the cheaper model I tried was right at the edge of not fitting. I was a bit leary of the rigid pre-formed end of the cuff, but have found it to be useful, eliminating the clumsy flopping and fumbling of the end you sometimes have when trying to apply the cuff to yourself one-handed. I've had very few error messages when taking a reading with the Omron HM-711 DLX, the measurements seem to be consistent and correct, and the battery operation is handy so you can take a reading wherever it's comfortable without being tethered to an outlet (but I'm pleased that there is an AC option too). The time and date were easy to set and the memory and averaging features are a great bonus. The manual gives clear (and even pictorial) instructions on the proper positioning, posture and times to take readings for the best results. The cuff is a little squeezy on your arm when it reaches peak inflation, but definitely NOT any tighter than the automated one my doctor's office has used on me. My Doctor said Omron was the brand to go with, and I agree that it's a quality instrument.

The product was recommended by my sister, an RN, who has one. We got ours and have been happy with it. It is easy to use and seems to provide consistent readings.

I purchased this monitor to replace another brand that I had, hoping to get an easier-to-use cuff. To my disappointment this one is giving me even worse problems. Aligning it as directed, the cuff starts to inflate but then stops and I get an error indication. If I hold my arm *just right*, making contact with the cuff's lining in a particular position, I can (sometimes after 7 or 8 tries) get it to grab and inflate all the way and give me a reading. It's very irritating and not conducive to healthy blood pressure! And repeat readings often are not at all similar to each other. I believe the cuff is neither too small nor too large for my arm, so maybe it's just defective. I do like the large display.

I am pleasantly surprised by the consistancy of the readings. I would recommend this product. It shipped quickly as well.
