Amazon.com Review
Often, when "EZ" is part of a product's moniker, your internal cheese-meter starts sending out a warning beep. But the Ezonics EZCam USB deserves this abbreviation--it is so simple to set up and use that even the most technophobic can operate it.

Since the drivers aren't part of Windows 95 or 98, the software needs to be installed first, but this only takes a few seconds. After rebooting, simply plug the camera into a USB port with the connecting cable and Windows 98 picks it up and installs the driver.

The EZCam USB ships with a monstrous software bundle, including four Live Express programs--Video Panel, Send Mail, Card Maker, and Album. The package also features three video programs from Ulead--iPhoto Express, iPhoto Impact Album, and iPhoto Express Explorer--as well as Microsoft's Net Meeting for online videoconferencing with anyone else who has the free software and a camera.

The Live Express Video Panel works as smoothly as a VCR--press a button to start recording and press another to pause or stop recording. Once you've recorded a snippet of video, you can save it, send it via e-mail (recipients don't need Live Express; the videos will play on any PC), or insert it into an album. The EZCam also lets you take snapshots with one mouse click.

That's not to say the EZCam is perfect. Pictures taken with the EZCam's 100,000-pixel image sensor aren't as sharp as photos taken with a digital camera. And we never got very close to the maximum 30 frames per second that EZCam offers. On the other hand, we were able to run the camera on a 166 MHz Pentium machine quite smoothly and found it very fun and easy to handle.

The bottom line is that the Ezonics EZCam is a very affordable and highly useful peripheral. Take a seat behind this camera and you won't be disappointed. --J. Curtis

Pros:

  • Easy to set up and use
  • Excellent software bundle
  • Great value

Cons:

  • Camera didn't produce rated 30 fps during testing
  • Connecting cable slightly short

4 out of 5 stars Great Easy First Webcam and Cute Games for Kids   August 23, 2004
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

Well, I loved my ezcam, but here is the down and dirty:

PROS:

1. Easy & Quick/mostly painless install
2. Cute fun motion games for kids included on the install cd, that uses motion sensing to play games, my 6 yr old niece and 8 yr old nephew loved it (at least for the first 5-10 min)
3. Excellent video & still capture software, so easy to use
4. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking (I can't count the number of times I dropped mine, either from adjusting my 17" monitor and whoops forgetting I had my camera on top OR while I was rooting around moving stuff on my desk and bumped my monitor, it never fazed this sturdy little cam).
5. Decent picture quality (but, only if you have plenty of light).
6. GOTTA LOVE THE PRICE!! I lucked out and got mine new at Office Depot a long time ago during a sale or discontinue clearance and only paid $20 bucks for it.

CONS:

1. Forget about support, but then that's the case with a lot of pc accessories now a days.
2. ONLY WORKS WITH WIN 98 OR 2000 (if I recall it took a bit of fudging around with the install but it wasn't anything really difficult), but because I now have XP, I have to buy a new webcam (okay so it also helps that I won't have to listen to all of my friends fuss about the pic quality - I'm not big on bright lighting).
3. YOU HAVE TO HAVE LOTS OF BRIGHT LIGHT or this little toy isn't going to show anything but a dark image and you won't even be able to make out your face. Natural sunlight doesn't count as it seemed to make my images have a rather yellow tint.

So, if this is a first webcam and you have a tight budget and your pc is running 98 or 2000 then I say go for it, it's worth the very small amount of money you will spend out of pocket to get a web cam that's inexpensive.

I was gifted with Ezonics pc camera with registration no 5H-EX54-3497 and password SNOW-BANJO and I found the camera is not giving clear video pictures inspite of doing settings as per the guideline given in help menu. The frames are not continuos and i could not find in the web whom to contact with ezonics.com. I feel that these chinese goods are not having service facility or help through web.

1 out of 5 stars No Upgrade Drivers for Win ME   March 12, 2001

As long as you have win 98, the camera works great. I tried to load several different drivers I thought would be compatible but had no luck!. Ezonics should make some compensation or upgrade the drivers for Win ME users!

3 out of 5 stars WHOOPS! BOUNCE!   January 12, 2001

This is an excellent camera as far as Windows 98 is being used as your O.S. Recently i was shfted to Windows 2000 and the driver doesn't support win2000. So guys have a look at the configuration of Ezonics web cams before going for them. Hope this message should help everyone around this web-page.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this if you have Win2k or plan to upgrade to   November 20, 2000

This was a good camera, until I upgraded to Windows 2000. They offer absolutely no support for Windows 2000 with this cam, no drivers, they don't respond to emails either. Now it's sitting on my desk collecting dust because I don't want to downgrade to 98. Not worth it. Get a camera from a respectable company like logitech if you are buying.
